Our Impact

At Tasha Rui, as a slow fashion label, we're committed to making a positive impact on our planet and society.

We're proud to align with Australia's new Clothing Product Stewardship Scheme, known as 'Seamless,' which aims to transform the fashion industry into a circular and sustainable one.

Beneath our three sustainability pillars, our approach is organised into four key areas:

  1. Circular Design: We're dedicated to creating clothing that's durable, repairable, and environmentally friendly, and more easily recyclable.

  2. Circular Business Model: We balance the needs of our business with those of the environment, profits and people.

  3. Closing the Loop: We use regenerated and sustainable materials to make garments, in a socially responsible way. Through our partner, Upparel, we have a take back scheme to provide a better end to textiles.

  4. Behaviour Change & Giving Back: We’re researching and sharing ideas to empower you to act on sustainability. For each swimsuit order we donate $2 to the Australian Marine Conservation Society to act on our behalf for ocean care.

Sustainability & Social Impact Report 2023

1. Circular Design:

  • We prioritise quality and durability in our garments, ensuring they withstand the beach test and remain repairable.

  • Our prints and styles are crafted to help you express your creativity while embracing environmental responsibility, not just chasing trends.

  • Through education and behaviour change initiatives, we promote garment care to extend the lifespan of your swimwear.

2. Circular Business Model:

  • All swim styles are cut, sewn, and made in Sydney, Australia, ensuring ethical production practices and in unionised environment where employees have a voice and are paid fair wages.

  • Our swimwear printing process, done on regenerated yarns, is carried out by trusted partners in China, using certified sustainable yarns sourced from Europe and Taiwan. Accessories printing is performed in Australia with sustainable practices on sustainable and natural yarns.

  • We partner with environmentally and socially focused providers for all aspects of our business operations, from banking to shipping and packaging.

3. Closing the Loop:

Our fabrics are regenerative by design:

  • By using ECONYL® Regenerated Nylon and REPREVE®, we repurpose waste materials, diverting them from oceans and landfills into our circular model.

  • By using ECONYL® Regenerated Nylon as an outer fabric in our swimwear, VITA fabric by Carvico, a total of 15,34 kilograms of waste have been used and put into a lifecycle of re-use. The total savings compared to the same collection made with standard nylon are:

o GWP (Global Warming Potential) saved - 102 kg CO2 eq / year

o GER (Gross Energy Requirement) saved - 1.614 MJ / year

Production:

  • Approximately 30% of fabric is saved in production through efficient cutting and printing processes, with unusable offcuts recycled by our textile partner, Upparel.

Lifetime care:

  • Education efforts to help you reduce microfibre shedding during washing, minimising environmental impact by using washing bags such as Guppyfriend.

End of life solutions:

  • Customers can recycle their Tasha Rui garments and receive discounts on future purchases through our partnership with Upparel.

4. Behaviour Change & Giving Back:

  • We don't just make swimwear; we educate about environmental sustainability and social responsibility.

  • Proceeds from sales support the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS), and we share journal articles and lifestyle tips to empower sustainable living. We are currently tracking at $60AUD this financial year.

Our approach is rooted in transparency and fuelled by a commitment to continuous improvement. We welcome constructive suggestions as we strive to make a positive impact with every Tasha Rui purchase.
